(PP)

A new start to the
future!
Under this slogan Klaus-Michael
Machens, President of the Association
of German Amusement Parks and
Attractions (VDFU), presented his
2018 annual report. Around 180

representatives from the association's
member companies had travelled to
Hamburg to attend the regular general
meeting of their trade organisation on
18 and 19 February 2019. The board
of the association was able to report
on a successful season.

holders as successful. It was only in
September that Jürgen Gevers took
over from Ulrich Müller-Oltay, who
had retired after 16 years of reliable
operations, and Gevers was able to
pass his first `acid test' in the form of
this general meeting.

The president was also able to report
on some very successful projects from
the association's work. In the past year
members were able to receive support
from their association on various
fundamental issues: one special
service that was very positively
received was the guide to the General
Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
prepared by the association. "There
is no doubt that the regulation, which
is applicable to the whole EU, is
fundamentally a major step forward,"
said Machens. After all, "these large,
internationally active data gatherers
need to be significantly restrained
in their sometimes uninhibited
operations at the expense of personal
data privacy rights. However, it's
annoying that in the process the
large `data krakens' are thrown
into the same pot as associations,
federations, medical practices and
medium-sized enterprises, and this
needs correction," demanded the
association's president.

As always, the participants in the
meeting were able to take advantage
of numerous information and training
opportunities this year as well. With
an exclusive guided tour of Hamburg's
Chocoversum (see EAP 1/2019)
the members were not only able to
visit the business of an association
colleague, but also to learn a lot about
chocolate in general and its great
taste in particular.

The president also described the
change in the association's office

The VDFU Academy was also
concerned with questions of taste
and food & beverage trends. In
Part 1 of the academy, prestigious
food trend expert Jean Georges
Ploner, managing partner of Ploner
Hospitality Consulting, gave a
keynote speech not only on food
trends, but also on innovation
and retrovation, consumer habits,
digitalisation and sustainability in
gastronomy. In the second part, the
participants were able to listen to a
panel discussion specifically dedicated
to the special trends, questions and
possibilities of amusement park
gastronomy.
